takin’ care of francis

I love how sayings, songs and family jokes can instantly take you right back to a moment in time.

It was the summer of 1974. My sister and I were visiting my grandma. We had “helped” her mow her yard and were relaxing on the porch swing with a cold glass of lemonade. We had a little transistor radio and asked Grandma if we could play it. After the first song ended Grandma lovingly said, “Girls, I don’t know what in the world that song is about but somebody’s awful busy taking care of Francis. My sister and I both burst out laughing. The song was the new hit Taking Care of Business by Bachman – Turner Overdrive.

To this day whenever I have a productive day I think to myself, I am really taking care of Francis today. If my sister and I do a big project together we joke about takin care of Francis. Forty plus years later, if the song Takin Care of Business ever comes on the radio I always smile think of my Grandma.

ancestors

If you could see your ancestors all standing in a row,
Would you be proud of them or not?
Or don’t you really know? . . .

But here’s another question
Which requires a different view
If you could meet your ancestors
Would they be proud of you?

efforts

In all my efforts to learn to read, my mother shared fully my ambition and sympathized with me and aided me in every way she could. If I have done anything in life worth attention, I feel sure that I inherited the disposition from my mother.
